Allen Craig has announced his retirement from baseball.
Craig will join the Padres’ front office as an advisor to baseball operations. The 34-year-old had a terrific three-year stretch for the Cardinals from 2011-13 when he batted .312/.364/.500, but he never was the same after suffering a foot injury. Craig hadn’t played in the majors since 2015.

Padres re-signed 1B/OF Allen Craig to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Craig, 34, posted a decent .293/.375/.479 batting line with 13 home runs and 59 RBI over 92 games at Triple-A Paso in 2018. Perhaps 2019 will be the year he finally returns to the majors. He was an All-Star with the Cardinals back in 2013 before suffering a severe foot injury.

Matt Holliday (hand) is out of Wednesday’s lineup against the Pirates.
Holliday left Tuesday’s game with an injury to his right hand and is scheduled to be evaluated Wednesday in St. Louis. He speculated after Tuesday’s game that he could be dealing with a “ligament or tendon problem,” so we aren’t optimistic about his status for the rest of the season. Allen Craig will make the start in left field Wednesday.

Allen Craig homered twice and doubled in the win over the Phillies on Sunday night.
With a .314 average and eight homers in 172 at-bats, Craig is making quite a case for a starting job in right field or, gulp, first base next year. He’ll be a fixture in the St. Louis lineup until Matt Holliday returns.

A club source tells Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Matt Holliday (finger) is “doubtful” to return this season.
Holliday hasn’t played since last Tuesday due to inflammation in his right middle finger. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa did not have an update from the training staff prior to Monday’s game, but Holliday has yet to resume swinging a bat, suggesting that the pain has not subsided. While his status remains in a state of limbo, the hot-hitting Allen Craig should continue to see regular playing time in left field.

Matt Holliday (finger) will be unavailable for Saturday’s NLDS Game 1 against the Phillies.
Holliday was given a cortisone shot in his troublesome right middle finger on Thursday morning and is hoping to be ready by Game 2. But there’s no guarantee that he’ll play in the series at all. The Cardinals are lucky to have Allen “Wrench” Craig as a productive and capable fill-in.
  • COL Outfield #7
Contrary to previous reports, Matt Holliday did not receive a cortisone shot for his ailing right middle finger.
Holliday skipped the shot because it would have ruled him out for at least the next few days. While it’s mostly a matter of pain tolerance, the good news is that he was able to hit off a tee Friday with minimal discomfort. “I hit in the cage, felt pretty good, threw, felt pretty good,” said Holliday. “I think tomorrow I’ll hit, probably do batting practice, and see where it goes.” Holliday appears doubtful to start Game 1, but could be available for Game 2 on Sunday. Allen Craig will fill in if he is unable to go.

Matt Holliday (finger) is not in the lineup for Game 1 of the NLDS matchup against the Phillies.
As expected. Holliday hit off a tee Friday with minimal discomfort and could be back in the lineup for Game 2, but he’s no safe bet to make much of a contribution this series. Lance Berkman has slid over from right to left field, while Allen Craig takes Holliday’s spot in the lineup and is playing right.
  • TEX Designated Hitter
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa confirmed that Lance Berkman will start in right field for Game 1 of the World Series against the Rangers on Wednesday night.
Berkman sat in favor of Allen Craig in Game 4 of the NLCS against left-hander Randy Wolf, but he’ll be in the lineup for the series opener against C.J. Wilson. There’s a chance La Russa could go with Craig in right field and Berkman at DH when the series moves to Texas.
  • TEX Designated Hitter
Lance Berkman will serve as designated hitter in Game 3 of the World Series against the Rangers on Saturday.
Not unexpected as the series shifts to Arlington. Allen Craig, who delivered go-ahead pinch-hits on Wednesday and Thursday, will make the start in right field.
