Alex Meyer announced on Instagram on Tuesday that he’s retired from his playing career.
Meyer hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2017 and has dealt with a series of shoulder issues since. The 29-year-old was a first-round pick of the Nationals back in 2011 and was a mainstay on prospect lists for a couple of years, but things just didn’t work out as hoped. He posted a 4.63 ERA in 19 starts and three relief appearances between the Twins and Angels.

Alex Meyer told reporters Wednesday that he needed arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in November.
He had a labrum repair on the same shoulder in September 2017, which cost him all of the 2018 season. Meyer won’t be ready for the opening of the 2019 campaign. He was re-signed to a minor league contract in December after being designated for assignment by the Angels in November.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler said Monday that Alex Meyer (shoulder) won’t be ready for Opening Day.
Meyer, 29, missed all of last season following labrum surgery and encountered a setback in August which required a cortisone shot. The Angels released him in November before bringing him back on a minor league deal. He’s not expected to begin throwing until February, so it’s just not realistic that he’ll be ready for the start of the season. Meyer showed some interesting flashes with the Angels in 2017 before injuring his shoulder, but it’s tough to know what to expect from him moving forward.

Angels re-signed RHP Alex Meyer to a minor league contract.
The once highly-touted prospect missed the entire 2018 season following labrum surgery on his throwing shoulder and was designated for assignment in mid-November. He’ll remain in the Angels’ organization though where he’ll add valuable rotation depth. If he can prove his health, he could challenge for a spot in the club’s starting rotation.

    Angels released RHP Alex Meyer.
Meyer missed all of last season following labrum surgery on his throwing shoulder and had a setback earlier this offseason. The former top prospect should get another opportunity somewhere, but it’s possible his shoulder is toast.

Angels designated RHP Alex Meyer for assignment.
Meyer missed all of last season following labrum surgery on his throwing shoulder, and a recent setback put his status for the beginning of 2019 in doubt. The Angels would probably like to keep him -- he showed signs of having turned the corner before getting hurt in 2017 -- but they didn’t want to continue to use a 40-man spot on him.

Alex Meyer suffered a setback in his recovery from right shoulder surgery and won’t resume throwing for 4-6 weeks.
Meyer had labrum surgery in September of 2017. The tall right-hander hopes to contribute at some point next season, but obviously his status is pretty murky right now.

Angels activated RHP Alex Meyer from the 60-day disabled list.
Meyer missed all of this season while recovering from shoulder surgery. The hope is that he’ll be ready for Opening Day next year.

Twins acquired RHP Alex Meyer from the Nationals for OF Denard Span.
Meyer, the No. 23 overall pick in 2011, posted an excellent 2.86 ERA and 139/45 K/BB ratio over 129 innings this season between Class A Hagerstown and High-A Potomac. Checking in at 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds, the 22-year-old right-hander sits in the mid-90s with his fastball and has a power slider. It will help to see him against more advanced competition, but he could be an impact starter if things break right. Parting with Span means that Ben Revere will be the everyday center fielder for the Twins moving forward.

Twins pitching prospect Alex Meyer has been placed on Double-A New Britain’s disabled list due to a shoulder strain.
The Twins don’t consider the injury to be serious, but obviously they’ll take a cautious approach with one of their top pitching prospects. Meyer has pitched well this season at New Britain, posting a 3.69 ERA with 73 strikeouts over 61 innings.
