Adbert Alzolay will need Tommy John surgery, manager Craig Counsell said.
It was announced last week that Alzolay would undergo some season-ending procedure but not what that procedure would be. Tommy John surgery will put him out for most of next year, leaving the Cubs with a tough decision over whether to keep him around at something very close to his 2024 salary of $2.11 million in the hopes that he’ll make a bigger contribution in 2026, his final year before free agency.

Adbert Alzolay will undergo season-ending forearm surgery.
Alzolay suffered a setback earlier this week during his rehabilitation from a forearm strain that’s kept him on the shelf since mid-May. No word yet on the exact nature of the procedure, but it’s likely that Alzolay is facing a significant absence, and is definitely finished for the remainder of the current season. There should be additional updates on his status in the coming days.

Adbert Alzolay, who made a third rehab appearance Saturday, has suffered a setback and is returning to Chicago for an examination.
Alzolay has missed 2 1/2 months with a forearm strain. Any sort of significant setback would probably end his season.

Adbert Alzolay (forearm) will throw a live bullpen session at the Cubs’ spring training complex in Arizona on Friday.
It’s the first time that the 29-year-old hurler has faced live hitters as he works his way back from a right forearm flexor strain. If he’s able to avoid any setbacks, it sounds like Alzolay could be ready to return to the Cubs’ bullpen before the month of July is finished.

Adbert Alzolay (forearm) threw a successful 30-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old hurler continues to work his way back from a right forearm flexor strain that has had him shelved since mid-May. He’s getting close to facing live hitters and a minor league rehab assignment could soon follow. If everything goes according to plan, Alzolay could be able to rejoin the Cubs’ bullpen before the end of July.

Adbert Alzolay (forearm) has progressed to throwing bullpen sessions.
Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy told reporters Friday that Alzolay is progressing well and will ramp up to facing hitters at some point later this month. The 29-year-old righty has been out since mid-May due to a right forearm flexor strain.

Adbert Alzolay (forearm) placed catch Monday at the Cubs’ Arizona Complex.
It’s the first time Alzolay has been able to play catch since he was shut down, and he reportedly threw from 60 feet away. The right-hander is on the 60-day injured list, and isn’t eligible to return to the Chicago bullpen until around the All-Star break. There’s no guarantee that Alzolay will be able to return in 2024, but this is a positive step forward.

Cubs transferred RHP Adbert Alzolay from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
Alzolay is now off the 40-man roster, and the Cubs used that space to select the contract of David Bote. Alzolay has been on the injured list since May 13 with a forearm strain, and he’s now not eligible to return to the Chicago bullpen until July 13. It’s plausible we won’t see him back much later than that date.

Adbert Alzolay is getting a second opinion on his right forearm.
Not great. Alzolay hit the injured list earlier this month with a right forearm strain and the fact that he’s seeking multiple medical opinions seems to indicate that he could be facing an extended absence. There should be some clarity on his status later this week, but it’s looking unlikely that he’ll be back anytime soon.

Cubs placed RHP Adbert Alzolay on the 15-day injured list with a strained right forearm.
Those are never good. Alzolay, who also missed time with a forearm strain late last year, was bounced from the closer’s role in April after blowing his fourth save in seven tries. He had been reasonably effective of late and even picked up a save in a 10-inning game yesterday, but as a result of the injury, everyone holding on to him in fantasy leagues can probably move on now. Hector Neris has been the Cubs’ primary closer of late.
