The 31-year-old outfielder has already reported to Triple-A Tacoma and is in their lineup on Tuesday night. Engel was released by the Padres last week after going 0-for-6 with a pair of strikeouts in his five games at the big league level. He’ll add outfield depth for the M’s.

Engel passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment last week. The 31-year-old outfielder, who missed time earlier this season due to a left hamstring strain, went 0-for-6 with a pair of strikeouts in just five contests for the Padres. He should be able to find a new opportunity on the open market.

With José Azocar set to return from the injured list on Saturday, the Padres needed to clear a spot on the roster and it looks like Engel drew the short straw this time around. The 31-year-old was 0-for-6 with two strikeouts in his limited action with the big league club.

Engel missed the start of the season with a left hamstring strain. He was activated from the injured list on Friday and will make his season debut against the Padres NL-West rivals, Los Angeles Dodgers. Trent Grisham will retreat to the bench with left Julio Urías on the bump for the Dodgers.
