Athletics signed RHP Aaron Civale to a one-year, $6 million contract.
It’s a little surprising to see Civale get $6 million after posting a 4.85 ERA in 102 innings last season, but the A’s need to pay a little extra to get pitchers to come to Sacramento. Civale’s strikeout rate has dropped three years running, from a peak of 24.1% in 2022 to 20.2% last year, and he’s still a big-time flyball pitcher. He projects pretty poorly with the A’s, but it also not like they have a bunch of quality alternatives.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Athletics have reached an agreement on a contract with free agent right-hander Aaron Civale.
Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive.com report that it will be a one-year, major league contract while Jeff Passan of ESPN adds that it will be for $6 million. The 30-year-old righty made 23 appearances (18 starts) between the Brewers, White Sox and Cubs in 2025, posting a 4.85 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and an 88/33 K/BB ratio over 102 innings. He’ll give the A’s a capable veteran option to fill out the back end of their Opening Day rotation.

Cubs claimed RHP Aaron Civale off waivers from the White Sox.
Civale fortifies Chicago’s rotation depth heading into the final month of the season and will be eligible for the postseason, if the Cubs get there. The 30-year-old righty has posted an underwhelming 5.26 ERA across 89 innings (18 starts) this season between the White Sox and Brewers.

Aaron Civale allowed five hits and five runs with one walk and four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Royals on Wednesday.
Civale was cruising right along through four shutout innings and let only one runner on over that stretch. Then bam: he allowed a homer, single, single, walk, and another single before being mercifully pulled from the game. Reliever Tyler Gilbert did him no favors and allowed every inherited runner to score which destroyed Civale’s final ledger. He’s set for an enticing yet terrifying two-start week coming up against the Twins and Tigers.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #43
Aaron Civale was tagged for five runs in 4 2/3 innings by the Royals in Wednesday’s loss.
Civale put up a couple of good starts leading up to the trade deadline, but the White Sox never did find any takers, and after one more excellent outing afterwards, he’s given up 21 earned runs over 19 innings in his last four starts. The White Sox could look elsewhere in his spot next month with Sean Burke and Jonathan Cannon potentially returning from the minors. As is, he’s slated to start Sept. 1 against the Twins.

Aaron Civale allowed four runs in five innings and got a no-decision against the Twins on Friday.
Civale gave up five hits, walked four and struck out five. The 30-year-old right-hander allowed at least four runs for the second time in his last three starts. Civale has a 5.02 ERA and 70/32 K/BB ratio in 84 1/3 innings this year. He’s lined up to face the Royals at home next week.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #43
Aaron Civale allowed three runs in six innings and took the loss against the Royals on Friday.
Civale gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out three. The 30-year-old right-hander bounced back from a nine-run outing his last time out to put up a quality start against the Royals Friday. Civale has a 4.88 ERA and 65/28 K/BB ratio in 79 1/3 innings this year. He’s lined up to face the Braves on the road next week.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #43
Aaron Civale allowed nine runs and took the loss against the Guardians on Friday.
Civale gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out six. The 30-year-old right-hander hadn’t been scored on in his last three outings and had allowed five runs total over his last five starts. Civale’s ERA is up to 4.91 with a 62/27 K/BB ratio in 73 1/3 innings this year. He’s lined up to face the Tigers at home next week.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #43
Aaron Civale fired 6 1/3 scoreless innings to get a win over the Angels on Saturday.
Civale’s first few starts with the White Sox weren’t terribly impressive, but he’s really picked it up as of late. This makes back-to-back outings that the 30-year-old hasn’t given up a run, and he allowed just one hit while striking out eight in the impressive outing. Civale now has a 3.99 ERA on the 2025 campaign, and he’ll look to keep up the good work against one of his former teams next week in the Guardians.
  • CWS Starting Pitcher #43
Aaron Civale tossed five scoreless frames against in the Cubs in a no-decision Saturday.
Civale struck out six and walked none in his second straight positive outing, and this one came against a much tougher offense (he allowed one unearned run in six innings versus the Pirates last time out). It’ll probably be his last start for the White Sox, as the team would prefer to deal him before the deadline, but if not, he’ll face the Angels next Friday.
