Someone familiar with the situation tells Newsday that free agent S Gibril Wilson is expected to sign a deal with the Raiders.
The deal would be for $6-6.5 million a year, more than he was initially said to be seeking. Wilson had an inconsistent run in New York, where he often flashed big-hitting skills with inconsistent coverage ability. Michael Huff, if he stays, will probably move to free safety but that’s just speculation on our part.
  • ATL Defensive Back #38
The 49ers and Raiders are battling for the services of free agent FS Dashon Goldson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Goldson is one of the top safeties on the market and would be wise to let a bidding war ensue. The Niners are already on the record saying re-signing him is their No. 1 priority and the Raiders are may be ready to let free agent Michael Huff walk. Look for Goldson to land with the highest bidder.
  • FA Defensive Back #29
    Raiders released DB Michael Huff.
The versatile defensive back was owed $4 million in base salary, plus a $4 million roster bonus. Parked at corner last season, he was shifting back to safety in 2013. Corners make more money, but we’d assume Huff will shop himself as a safety, with his versatility being a plus. He’s one of the league’s better pure cover men in center field. Meanwhile, Oakland is going to be historically bad in 2013.
  • FA Defensive Back #29
Ravens signed FS Michael Huff to a three-year, $6 million contract.
The highly athletic Huff was forced to play corner for the talent-depraved Raiders last season, but he’ll replace Ed Reed at free safety with the Ravens. It’s yet another shrewd signing from GM Ozzie Newsome as he rebuilds his defense. Huff is five years younger than Reed, has missed just four games in his seven-year career and his average annual salary is $3M cheaper. Thanks in large part to this week’s additions of Huff and Elvis Dumervil, the Ravens are a good bet to improve -- likely significantly -- on last year’s 17th-ranked defense.
  • JAX Defensive Back
Raiders signed S Donovin Darius to a three-year, $7.1 million contract.
Darius will immediately provide competition for Michael Huff and Stuart Schweigert. Huff and Darius are a closer match in skill set as run stuffers, but Schweigert seems more likely to lose his job. The Raiders have done a nice job rebuilding their secondary.
  • JAX Defensive Back
Donovin Darius is currently running as the Raiders’ third safety.
He could contend for a starting position later on, but Darius’ main role initially will be in the team’s “Wolverine” or three-safety nickel package. Stuart Schweigert remains at free safety with Michael Huff at the strong spot.
  • DET Defensive Back
Donovin Darius and Stuart Schweigert will compete to start in Oakland.
Michael Huff was viewed as a potential cornerback coming from Texas and Darius is a run stuffer, so playing Darius at his natural strong safety spot would seem to make the most sense. Schweigert is likely to lose his first-team status.
  • DET Defensive Back
The Raiders’ safeties will be interchangeable this season.
Michael Huff mostly played the strong side last year while Stuart Schweigert manned the free spot. This season, Huff and Schweigert will play both to disguise coverages. Both safeties should be adequate IDP picks in 2007.
  • FA Defensive Back #29
Raiders DB Michael Huff suffered a “mild” ankle sprain Sunday.
He’s day-to-day and unlikely to play in the team’s next exhibition.
  • FA Defensive Back #29
Michael Huff left Sunday night’s preseason game with an ankle injury.
Huff incurred the injury after intercepting a pass thrown by Niners QB Alex Smith. The No. 7 pick overall’s status is uncertain.
