The St. John’s Red Storm takes on the Creighton Blue Jays this afternoon as part of a New Year’s Eve Big East doubleheader on Peacock. The slate kicks off with Seton Hall vs Xavier at 2pm ET and then continues with the St. John’s - Creighton meeting at 4pm ET.
Today marks the 30th all-time meeting between these programs, with Creighton leading the series 18-11. But St. John’s enters on a six-game winning streak, with five of those wins coming by double digits. The Red Storm are 11-2 (2-0 Big East), and their last defeat came back in November, when they lost to Georgia 66-63 before Thanksgiving.
In their most recent win, a 97-76 drubbing of Delaware, the Johnnies took the lead early and held that lead the entire game. They finished the win with six players scoring in double digits, led by Deivon Smith’s 20 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists. Smith, along with juniors Zuby Ejiofor and RJ Luis Jr. have led the way for St. John’s this season, and will be key to continuing the team’s win streak on the road this afternoon.
After starting the season on a four-game win streak, Creighton has struggled to find consistency. They defeated Villanova their last time out to snap a two-game losing streak and secure their first conference win of the season. Ryan Kalkbrenner, the 7'1" senior from Florissant, Missouri, led the scoring with 23 points, one of three Blue Jays to tally 20+ points on the evening. Kalkbrenner could be in contention for a Big East Player of the Year designation this season — he won Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and has taken on an even bigger role for his squad following the departure of Baylor Scheierman (currently part of the Boston Celtics organization).
