Matt Shoemaker has agreed to a contract with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
Shoemaker will look to rebuild his value overseas in 2022 after posting a calamitous 8.06 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 40/27 K/BB ratio across 60 1/3 innings (16 appearances, 11 starts) with the Twins last season. The 35-year-old veteran right-hander hasn’t exceeded 100 innings in a single season since 2016, but holds a respectable 4.24 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 580/174 K/BB ratio across 662 2/3 innings (128 appearances, 115 starts) in the majors since 2013.

Giants signed RHP Matt Shoemaker to a minor-league contract.
Shoemaker agreed to terms with the Giants over the weekend after being released by the Twins last week. The 34-year-old righty holds a disastrous 8.06 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 40/27 K/BB ratio across 60 1/3 innings (16 appearances, 11 starts). He’ll report to Triple-A Sacramento and serve as organizational depth for the remainder of the season.

    Twins released RHP Matt Shoemaker.
Shoemaker was released after being designated for assignment by the Twins last week. The 34-year-old righty posted a disastrous 8.06 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 40/27 K/BB ratio across 60 1/3 innings (16 appearances, 11 starts) this season. Given his extensive big-league experience, there’s a chance he finds another opportunity over the final two months of the season.

Twins designated RHP Matt Shoemaker for assignment.
It looked like a crafty move when Minnesota signed Shoemaker to a one-year, $2 million free agent contract back in February, but the 34-year-old right-hander is now off the 40-man roster after struggling to an 8.06 ERA in 11 starts and five relief appearances. He could maybe draw some interest on waivers given his past success and the many teams around MLB that need pitching help.

  • MIN Starting Pitcher #17
Bailey Ober will start for the Twins on Friday versus the Astros.
It had been Matt Shoemaker’s turn to start, but Shoemaker will instead be available out of the bullpen. Whether this is long-term demotion for Shoemaker isn’t clear, but obviously how Ober fares Friday could factor into that decision. Ober has given up five runs while holding an 8/1 K/BB ratio over eight innings in his first two major league starts.

Matt Shoemaker retired just one batter while being charged with nine runs -- eight earned -- in a loss to the Royals on Friday.
Well, that will leave a mark. Shoemaker gave up six hits and walked a pair in the frame. Each of the first five batters reached safely. The big blow was a three-run homer off the bat of Whit Merrfield, which finally chased him from the ballgame. Shoemaker’s previous career-high was seven runs allowed in a game, but he topped that in painful fashion in this one. His ERA now sits at 7.28 for the year and it’s worth wondering if this will be the final time he pitches for the Twins.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #67
Matt Shoemaker was lit up for five runs over 4 1/3 innings on Sunday in a loss to the Royals.
Shoemaker notched five strikeouts and only issued one walk. The 34-year-old righty simply hasn’t missed enough bats to warrant a roster spot for fantasy managers in standard mixed leagues. He’ll carry a lackluster 5.90 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 33/19 K/BB ratio across 50 1/3 innings (10 starts) into a rematch versus the Royals on Friday.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #67
Matt Shoemaker allowed only a run over six innings Monday in a no-decision against the Orioles.
Shoemaker remained 2-5 on the season, but he helped his rotation status with a second straight fine outing. He’s lowered his ERA from 7.83 to 5.48 by coming in at 3.13 over his last four starts. Next up for him is a home start versus the Royals.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #67
Matt Shoemaker allowed two runs on five hits and four walks to take the loss Wednesday against the White Sox.
Shoemaker was lucky to get through his six innings with only two runs across but was able to keep the Twins in the game despite Lucas Gilotilo throwing a gem on the other side. The right-hander was able to induce a lot of groundballs in the contest, but the four walks were a season-high. Shoemaker now carries a 6.08 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 40 frames into his next start that will take him back home to play the Orioles.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #67
Matt Shoemaker surrendered five runs over six innings in a loss to the Athletics on Friday.
He struck out four and walked a pair in the loss. Shoemaker served up three homers which accounted for all five runs against him. He’s now allowed 10 homers in just 34 innings so far this season. It’s no surprise he’s sitting on a 6.62 ERA this season. He’s not on the fantasy radar at this point and probably won’t have a rotation spot for much longer.
