Matt Harvey has announced his retirement from baseball.
“Goodbye, baseball. And thank you,” Harvey wrote as part of the announcement. Harvey truly lived the highs and lows that this sport has to offer. He entered the majors like a shooting star, posting a 2.36 ERA though his first 36 starts (including starting the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field) before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He returned with a vengeance in 2015, posting a 2.71 ERA over 29 regular season starts leading into a World Series run. He famously carried a shutout into the ninth inning in Game 5 against the Royals before things fell apart. His career was never really the same after undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome the next year, posting a 5.92 ERA over 115 games (107 starts) while also pitching for the Reds, Angels, Royals, and Orioles. Harvey served a 60-game suspension last year for admitting drug use and occasionally exchanging pain pills with the late Tyler Skaggs. Most recently, the 34-year-old Harvey pitched for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic, but failed to find interest from MLB teams. It’s a complicated legacy, but for a brief while, he was one of the game’s most transcendent stars.

Matt Harvey started and threw three scoreless innings as Italy bested Cuba 6-3 on Thursday.
Harvey topped out at 90.2 mph on the gun today, so he was far from overwhelming. Still, Cuba’s lineup hasn’t been able to get anything going thus far. Italy got two hits apiece from Vinnie Pasquantino, Dominic Fletcher and Darin Mastrobuoni. Brewers top prospect Sal Frelick stole a base and scored twice from the leadoff spot. With Cuba dropping to 0-2, the door is wide open for Italy, Chinese Taipei or Panama to advance from Pool A along with the Netherlands.

Matt Harvey has elected free agency.
Harvey underwent knee surgery in September and didn’t end up making it to the majors last year after signing a minor league contract with the Orioles. The 33-year-old right-hander will likely have to settle this offseason for another minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Matt Harvey underwent knee surgery last month.
Harvey signed a minor league contract with the Orioles last April, but didn’t end up making it to the majors last season for the first time since 2014. The 33-year-old right-hander, who also served a 60-game suspension for violating the joint drug program between MLB and the MLB Players Association, posted a respectable 3.71 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 63/24 K/BB ratio across 70 1/3 innings (13 starts) in the Orioles’ system. It’s unclear whether he’ll be ready for spring training, but he’s hoping to pitch somewhere next season. He’s extremely unlikely to make an impact for fantasy managers, regardless of where he winds up.

Matt Harvey allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings on Friday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Norfolk.
Harvey has finished serving a league-issued 60-game suspension for revelations that surfaced during the trial involving the death of former Angels teammate Tyler Skaggs and made his Triple-A debut for the Orioles on Friday evening. The 33-year-old right-hander, who threw 98 pitches (61 strikes) in his latest outing, is expected to make several additional starts before being considered for the Orioles’ starting rotation later this season.

Matt Harvey will make his first start at Triple-A Norfolk on Friday.
The right-hander has already made three starts in the lower minors, posting a 1.69 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and eye-opening 20/0 K/BB ratio across 16 innings of work. If he pitches well and deep into the game in Friday’s outing, there’s a chance that he could then be cleared to join the Orioles rotation.

Matt Harvey will begin a minor league rehab assignment with High-A Aberdeen on Thursday.
The veteran right-hander was handed a 60-game suspension before the season began for the information that he revealed during the Tyler Skaggs trial. It’s going to take him several starts to get fully ramped up and he isn’t likely to be an option for the O’s at the big league level until after the All-Star break. Even then, he isn’t likely to be very effective after registering a 6.27 ERA over 28 starts for them during the 2021 campaign.

Matt Harvey has been suspended 60 games for a violation of the joint drug program between MLB and the MLBPA.
This ruling stems from the information that Harvey revealed during the Tyler Skaggs trial back in February. Harvey testified in court that he exchanged pain pills with Skaggs during a period before the former Angels pitcher’s tragic overdose death. The suspension is retroactive to April 29. Harvey signed a new minor league contract with the Orioles on April 8 and has been working out at their spring training complex in Florida.

Orioles signed RHP Matt Harvey to a minor league contract.
The deal was reportedly close Thursday and is now official. Harvey held an ugly 6.27 ERA over 28 starts for Baltimore in 2021. Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Harvey faces a 60-game suspension for the information he revealed during the Tyler Skaggs trial.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network confirms that the Orioles are close to re-signing Matt Harvey.
It’ll be a minor league deal, per Heyman, and the plan is to have Harvey report to extended spring training in Florida for the time being. The 33-year-old right-hander struggled to a 6.27 ERA over 28 starts for Baltimore in 2021 and could face some sort of suspension for the information he revealed during the Tyler Skaggs trial.
