Twins RHP prospect Luis Rijo fired seven innings while allowing just one hit and striking out 10 for Low-A Cedar Rapids on Thursday.
Rijo, 20, didn’t allow a run to score, and he also didn’t issue a walk. A relative unknown coming into 2019, the right-hander has impressed in his time in the Midwest League in 2019 over 11 starts with a 2.33 ERA and 52/18 K/BB ratio over 58 frames. He sits in the low 90s with his fastball -- and likely offers more as he gets stronger (5'11/165) and he complements that heater with a solid curve and change. These pitches all play up because Rijo throws all three pitches for strikes, and the command could be plus. Acquired in the Lance Lynn trade, Rijo has a chance to pitch in the back of a rotation someday, and he could be more if that fastball does become a plus offering.
