Dotson, a former seventh-round pick of the Dolphins, is up to provide some girth along the Bills’ decimated line. Marcell Dareus is going to have to play exclusively at nose tackle going forward with Torell Troup (back) and Kyle Williams (foot) on injured reserve.

Dotson was owed just $700,000, but Buffalo didn’t deem him talented enough to keep around with younger players possessing more upside on the roster.

Odrick played defensive tackle at Penn State and likely needs some development as a 3-4 end. It’s likely that he’ll be part of a rotation while the Dolphins use various fronts with their arsenal of defensive linemen.

The spot is wide open and Starks can’t seem to get a shot at earning it. Phillip Merling, Tony McDaniel, and Lionel Dotson have been auditioning to fill the spot left vacant with the release of Vonnie Holliday. Starks started four games last season, compiling 29 tackles, four sacks, and an interception.

Merling was as a starter on the first depth chart, but has been losing reps to Randy Starks and Tony McDaniel recently. The team is also high on Lionel Dotson. Miami may end up rolling with a heavy rotation at right defensive end.

Dotson played tackle at Arizona and had 6.5 sacks as a senior. He’ll be looked at inside and out by Miami, but isn’t a great bet to make the club.

Defensive coordinator George Edwards is likely behind the move. He coached Dotson in Miami from 2008-2009. The former seventh-rounder isn’t a great be to make the final roster.

Dotson’s injury is undisclosed. The 2008 seventh-round pick will go on injured reserve after clearing waivers. Dotson, 25, recorded two tackles in two appearances while playing in place of Jared Odrick and Tony McDaniel.

A seventh-round pick by the Dolphins in 2008, Dotson had been Miami before being cut at the roster deadline last week. He’ll provide depth with Jared Odrick nursing a deep bone bruise in his leg.

Dotson was pretty much a no brainer, but Thomas comes as a mild surprise. Beat writer Omar Kelly speculates that Thomas’ release means OG Cory Procter has made the team.
