Kyle Williams hauled in a 12-yard touchdown catch in San Francisco’s 27-24 loss to the Cowboys in Week 2.
It was an impressive grab over Mike Jenkins, as Alex Smith floated the pass and Williams made a spectacular one-handed grab falling out of bounds. We would have liked to have seen more than one target for Williams with Michael Crabtree out and Braylon Edwards sidelined for a majority of the game. There’s upside here, but certainly not enough to warrant fantasy consideration.
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
Ted Ginn projects as the 49ers’ No. 2 wideout for the next few weeks.
With Josh Morgan (ankle) and Braylon Edwards (knee) sidelined, the 49ers are getting really thin at wideout. Kyle Williams will step in as the No. 3 receiver and they’ll have to look to the street for a No. 4. A straight-line speedster, Ginn is an awful fit for Alex Smith’s tentative, game-managing style.
  • FA Running Back #27
Coach Jim Harbaugh indicated that second-round RB LaMichael James will not be ready for punt-return duties as a rookie.
The upshot is that Ted Ginn is likely locked in as the fourth receiver and return specialist. With first-rounder A.J. Jenkins joining Mario Manningham and Randy Moss as 2012 additions, Kyle Williams and Brett Swain appear to be crowded out of the picture at wide receiver.
  • FA Wide Receiver #18
CSN Bay Area believes WR Kyle Williams’ roster spot will be in danger if the 49ers draft a receiver within the first four rounds.
This is not a surprise, as reliable beat writer Matt Maiocco reported in late January Williams’ roster spot “certainly is not guaranteed.” That was before the Niners re-upped Ted Ginn and signed Randy Moss and Mario Manningham. Regardless of what happens in the draft, the goat of the 49ers’ NFC title game loss will have to be lights out in camp to earn a roster spot.
  • FA Wide Receiver #18
Kyle Williams (concussion) has been cleared for the playoffs.
Williams sustained his concussion in Week 16 and the Niners don’t play again until Jan. 14. He’s been symptom free for a couple days now. Williams and Ted Ginn figure to rotate opposite Michael Crabtree in the playoffs.
  • FA Wide Receiver #18
    49ers WR Kyle Williams played a career-high 34 snaps in Week 13.
The fallout from Braylon Edwards’ (knee, shoulder) absence. Ted Ginn also played 34 snaps in the blowout while Michael Crabtree led the way with 40. This offense only supports one fantasy receiver, and Crabtree is it. Williams and Ginn are poor bets to repeat their Week 13 performances regardless of Edwards’ status.
  • FA Wide Receiver #17
Braylon Edwards spent much of the second half of Sunday’s win over the Cardinals on the sideline.
Beat writer Matt Maiocco says it was because Edwards is still rounding into shape off knee surgery, but we’re not so sure. Edwards dropped a pass in the end zone and has been a poor fit with Alex Smith all season. He could be looking at a rotation with Kyle Williams at the No. 2 receiver spot going forward. Through six games as a Niner, Edwards is averaging 2.1 catches for 27.8 yards with no touchdowns.
  • FA Wide Receiver #19
49ers WRs Ted Ginn (ankle) and Kyle Williams (concussion) resumed practicing on Thursday.
Ginn missed the last two games with an ankle sprain. Williams was cleared to return to football activities early this week. The Niners’ second and third receivers are mere fliers in fantasy playoff leagues.
  • FA Wide Receiver #18
Kyle Williams caught two passes for 66 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s easy win over the Rams.
Williams made perhaps the best play by any 49ers’ wide receiver this season in the fourth quarter, hauling in a short pass in traffic before turning on the jets and sprinting 56 yards to the end zone. The score was his third of the year, and second in three weeks. Impressive, but Williams was targeted just twice today, and shouldn’t be a factor once Braylon Edwards (knee, shoulder) returns.
  • FA Wide Receiver #18
Kyle Williams was forced from Saturday’s game with a head injury in the fourth quarter and did not return.
The 49ers medical staff took Williams to the locker room for observation after he was ''sandwiched’’ on a kick return by Michael Robinson. The severity of his injury is not yet public. Check back later this week for an update on his status.
