According to independent journalist Daniel Kim, free agent left-hander Kwang-Hyun Kim is close to returning to the Korean Baseball Organization for the 2022 season.
Kim, who was a KBO insider for ESPN previously, adds that the SSG Landers have officially requested a status check on the veteran southpaw, which is standard procedure when signing a player from the major leagues. The KBO has limits on the number of foreign players each club can sign, but those obviously wouldn’t apply to the South Korean native, who spent 12 seasons in the KBO from 2007 until 2019. The 33-year-old lefty has recorded a solid 2.97 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 104/51 K/BB ratio across 145 2/3 innings (35 appearances, 28 starts) with the Cardinals over the last two seasons.

Jeeho Yoo of Yonhap News reports that Kwang Hyun Kim has signed a four-year, $12.3 million contract with the SSG Landers of the Korean Baseball Organization.
Daniel Kim reported previously that the left-hander was headed back to his native Korea, and now we have the particulars of the contract. While Kim struggled toward the end of his two-year stint with the Cardinals, he had a successful run overall, posting a 2.97 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 35 appearances (28 starts).

  • LAD Relief Pitcher #65
Giovanny Gallegos took a blown save Tuesday against the Mets in the Cardinals’ extra-innings win.
Gallegos came on to protect a one-run lead and served up a game-tying home run to Javier Baez on the first pitch he threw. The Cards wound up scoring three runs in the top of the 11th and barely hung on in the bottom of the frame, with Kwang Hyun Kim allowing a couple runs before getting Albert Almora to ground out to end it. Gallegos has been used a lot and hasn’t been as invincible in the second half, but he’s still a good bet as the closer the rest of the way.

  • FA Starting Pitcher #46
Jake Woodford will start for the Cardinals on Thursday versus the Dodgers.
That could have been Kwang-Hyun Kim’s turn, but he was used in relief on Tuesday night. Woodford, 24, holds a career 4.82 ERA and 53/22 K/BB ratio through his first 65 1/3 innings at the major league level and is not a recommended fantasy option for Thursday’s matinee against Los Angeles.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #33
Kwang-Hyun Kim was clobbered in Saturday’s loss to the Brewers, giving up four runs on seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings.
The left-hander also walked one and struck out one in the abbreviated outing. He served up a leadoff homer to Luis Urias to begin the game, then pitched himself out of trouble after allowing two more hits in the frame. He wasn’t as fortunate in the second, where the Brewers utilized four hits and a walk to push three more runs across and chase him from the game. Even with this disaster, he still sports a respectable 3.53 ERA and 1.26 WHIP on the season. He’ll try to pick up the pieces on Thursday in a tough matchup against the Dodgers.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #33
Kwang-Hyun Kim allowed one run over four innings on Sunday in a no-decision against the Pirates.
Kim struck out three batters and only issued one walk. He gave up three hits as a sacrifice fly from Yoshi Tsutsugo in the fourth inning represented the lone tally against him. The 33-year-old lefty has compiled a respectable 3.23 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 75/34 K/BB ratio across 97 2/3 innings (21 appearances, 20 starts) this season. He’ll face the Brewers on Saturday night in a challenging road matchup.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #33
Cardinals president John Mozeliak suggested Wednesday that Kwang-Hyun Kim will likely slide back into the starting rotation.
So much for the thought that LHP prospect Matthew Liberatore might get a shot. Kim has been working in relief since getting activated off the injured list earlier this week, but the Cardinals need to cover some starting assignments after Jack Flaherty went down Tuesday with a right shoulder strain. Kim could get the ball Sunday at Pittsburgh.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #33
Cardinals activated LHP Kwang Hyun Kim from the 10-day injured list.
Kim has been sidelined since August 8 with left elbow inflammation and is expected to work out of the St.Louis bullpen for the rest of the season. The southpaw carries a 3.36 ERA and 1.22 over 91 frames this season.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #33
Kwang-Hyun Kim said Friday that he feels good after going two inning in his first minor league rehab start with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.
The left-hander noted that he received a cortisone shot earlier in the week that helped him immensely. The Cardinals are still working on mapping out a schedule for his potential return, which may be to work out of the bullpen initially instead of jumping right back into the starting rotation.

  • INT Starting Pitcher #33
Kwang-Hyun Kim (elbow) allowed two solo home runs and struck out two over two innings in his first rehab start with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.
The Cardinals’ plan is to bring Kim back as a member of the rotation, although they haven’t ruled out activating him sooner if there’s a need in the bullpen. He’s missed the last couple weeks with elbow inflammation.
