Free agent QBs A.J. McCarron, Garrett Gilbert, Kevin Hogan, Mike Glennon, and Kurt Benkert worked out for the 49ers on Tuesday.
McCarron suffered a torn ACL in the 2021 preseason and has had no visits or interest since. This is a rough crew, but that’s what happens when you lose a quarterback in-season. Gilbert has started a game in each of the last two seasons and is probably the most competent option on the list. Glennon started four disastrous games with the Giants last year and has the most recent starting experience.

  • FA Quarterback #16
Texans signed QB Kevin Hogan, formerly of the Titans.
The Texans have a weak quarterback room after Davis Mills. Jeff Driskel, who may or may not be a tight end now, and Kyle Allen are the remaining quarterbacks on the roster. Hogan is likely a camp body, though his competition for the backup gig is uninspiring.

  • FA Quarterback #16
    Broncos waived QB Kevin Hogan.
With Drew Lock (thumb) sidelined, the Broncos don’t have a true QB2 on the roster unless undrafted rookie Brett Rypien is impressing. The Broncos likely aren’t done making changes to their quarterback depth chart. Hogan has more career interceptions (7) than touchdowns (4) and will likely just be a camp arm or QB3 from now on.
  • NYG Quarterback #2
9News’ Mike Klis reports Drew Lock took all second-team reps at Sunday’s practice.
The coaching staff has been vocal about their issues with their second-round rookie, but Lock officially surpassed Kevin Hogan as Joe Flacco’s backup at today’s practice. Hogan is now the scout team quarterback with rookie Brett Rypien sliding into the No. 3 spot. Expect to see a lot more Lock during the second preseason game.
  • FA Quarterback #16
    Broncos re-signed QB Kevin Hogan.
Hogan was originally a restricted free agent, but the Broncos did not offer a tender. He is almost certainly back on a one-year deal for less than the lowest tender. Denver should be looking for more behind Joe Flacco.
  • FA Quarterback #16
Broncos declared QB Kevin Hogan, CB Tramaine Brock, S Shamarko Thomas, LB Alexander Johnson, DE DeMarcus Walker, OT Elijah Wilkinson, and G Sam Jones inactive Week 4 against the Chiefs.
No real surprises here. Brock was doubtful with a thigh injury.
  • FA Quarterback #16
Broncos declared QB Kevin Hogan, G/C Sam Jones, LB Alexander Johnson, S Shamarko Thomas, DE DeMarcus Walker, T Elijah Wilkinson, and CB Isaac Yiadom inactive for Sunday’s Week 2 game versus the Raiders.
With no injuries a week ago, these are the exact same inactives that Denver had in Week 1.
  • FA Quarterback #16
    Chiefs waived QB Kevin Hogan.
A surprising fifth-round pick, Hogan probably lacks the tools to eventually push for a backup job. The Chiefs may try to develop him on the practice squad.
  • FA Quarterback #16
Browns promoted QB Kevin Hogan from the practice squad.
DT Gabe Wright has also been promoted to the 53-man roster. The No. 152 overall pick of the draft by the Chiefs, Hogan was waived at final cuts. A “winner” type, Hogan has unimposing physical tools, but is all the clichés — hard worker, high-IQ, gym rat — you could ever want a quarterback to be. We know PFTCommenter will be a fan. Hogan is not that much different from Browns draft pick and current starter Cody Kessler. The Browns would rather take a shot on developing Hogan than suffering through Charlie Whitehurst. Along with Terrelle Pryor, Hogan should back up Kessler against the Titans.
  • FA Quarterback #16
Kevin Hogan completed 12-of-24 passes for 100 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Browns’ 31-17, Week 7 loss to the Bengals, adding 104 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Cody Kessler was concussed in the first half, forcing Hogan into quarterback duties. The only offense Cleveland had was using Hogan and Isaiah Crowell on read-option plays. It had the Bengals’ defense all out of sorts early, with Hogan running for a 28-yard touchdown and Crowell scoring a short one. Cincinnati eventually figured it out, and Hogan collapsed for most of the second half. If Kessler can’t get cleared, Hogan will be under center against the Jets in Week 8.
