    Julian Edelman announced his retirement.
Edelman, 34, had basically spent the past two seasons attempting to improve his knee to no avail. He hangs up his cleats after an extremely successful career with the Patriots, arriving via a seventh-round pick in the 2009 draft and finishing after 11 seasons with 620 catches for 6,822 yards and 36 touchdowns, 58 rushing attempts for 413 yards, 177 punt returns for 1,986 yards and four touchdowns, 30 kick returns for 626 yards, and six completions on six passing attempts for 128 yards with one score and a perfect 158.3 passer rating. He has an outside shot of qualifying for the Hall of Fame on his postseason resume (118/1,422/5) alone.

    Patriots released WR Julian Edelman.
Edelman’s contract was terminated following a failed physical. Although there likely isn’t a market for a veteran slot guy who turns 35 in May and underwent knee surgery in October, there’s a terrific chance Tom Brady rallies the front office to make room for his old teammate in Tampa Bay; the Buccaneers still have a need there with Antonio Brown reportedly holding out for more money. It’s also possible this move is a precursor to Edelman simply walking away after winning three rings and one Super Bowl MVP award in 11 seasons with New England. The transaction frees up $3.4 million in cap space for the Pats.

The Boston Herald reports it’s “doubtful” Julian Edelman (knee) will be able to play all 16 games in 2021.
The report is via a “source familiar with Edelman’s situation.” Per the source, “while surgery can provide temporary relief, nothing can solve the underlying problem.” Edelman was limited to six games last season, undergoing surgery in October. The Pats aggressively addressed receiver in free agency and could do so again in the draft. Headed into his age-35 campaign with a lengthy injury history even before the knee ailment that has hounded him the past two years, Edelman seems to have reached “any contribution will be a bonus” territory. The Patriots need to decide if that is worth Edelman’s $2.8 million base salary.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Julian Edelman (knee) remains unsure if he’ll be healthy enough to participate in the 2021 season.
“My understanding is he does want to play in 2021,” Rapoport said of Edelman’s current status, “that’s not the important thing. The important thing is his knee going to be healthy enough to play. He’s still rehabbing. He’s still recovering. Still trying to see if he’s healthy enough to be out there for the 2021 season.” Due $2.8 million in base salary this upcoming year, the Patriots will likely keep the veteran around if there’s even an outside chance he’s available at some point mid-season. 35 in May and obviously still recovering, however, Edelman remains one of the easier fades in any offseason fantasy drafts. He should be considered questionable for Week 1.

Julian Edelman (knee) is expected to play in 2021.
Edelman is signed through next year, but there’s been talk he could retire after back-to-back injury-riddled seasons. At a $2.8 million base salary, the Patriots should be open to keeping him, even if Edelman can’t be counted on as more than a No. 3 receiver. 34-year-old Edelman missed the final 10 games on IR with a knee injury but should be ready for the start of OTAs.

  • FA Wide Receiver #11
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots are not expected to activate Julian Edelman (knee) from injured reserve in Week 16.
Edelman isn’t expected to be activated for Week 17, either. 35 in May with back-to-back injury-riddled seasons behind him, Edelman’s career is also a toss-up at this point. He’ll finish the year with his fewest catches (21), receiving yards (315), and touchdowns (0) since 2011 if he’s unable to return for the regular season finale.

  • FA Wide Receiver #11
Julian Edelman (knee, IR) won’t play in Week 15 against Miami.
The Patriots opened Edelman’s 21-day practice window earlier this week. He was always a longshot to return Sunday and will remain on IR for at least one more game. Edelman’s next chance to return will come in Week 16 against Buffalo.

  • FA Wide Receiver #11
Patriots designated WR Julian Edelman (knee) to return from injured reserve.
With only three weeks left, teams are opening the 21-day practice window on IR’d players. Edelman seems unlikely to be active Sunday but this gives him a chance to return this season.

  • FA Wide Receiver #11
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Julian Edelman (knee, IR) is “day to day.”
Edelman has been on IR since undergoing knee surgery in October. With only three weeks left, the Patriots still haven’t designated him to return, but the day to day tag suggests he’s close. Edelman will be returning to a low-volume role behind Jakobi Meyers and N’Keal Harry when healthy.

  • FA Wide Receiver #11
Patriots activated WR Julian Edelman from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Edelman spent 11 days on the COVID list. He remains on injured reserve as he rehabs his knee injury. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier this week that he remains a “couple weeks away” from a return. Edelman isn’t much of a hold with the fantasy season going on only three weeks longer.
