Matthews played sparingly in the team’s opener and went unclaimed on waivers. WR Clarence Denmark was waived to make room for Matthews.

Matthews will serve as the Jags’ fifth receiver if he’s active this week. Per Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union, Matthews was elevated to the active roster to block the Colts from signing him with Austin Collie (concussion) out.

Matthews played just three snaps in the opener, dropping the only pass thrown his way. He goes to make room for veteran tight end Ernest Wilford.

Matthews, who starred at non-scholarship D-IAA San Diego, will enter Jags camp very low on the depth chart. He’ll be lucky to make the practice squad.

Matthews had an obscenely productive senior season at San Diego, hauling in 102 passes for 1,478 yards and a school-record 21 TDs. He spent time on the Colts’ practice squad last year after going undrafted in 2009.

Dillard was only expected to miss the season opener, so the stress fracture he suffered in the preseason is clearly more serious than previously expected. Dillard was competing for the team’s No. 2 WR job, and the injury is a big blow to his long term prospects. The team signed WR John Matthews off the practice squad to replace Dillard.

Matthews posted ridiculous stats at D-1AA San Diego, but he’s lacking NFL talent. Denmark, undrafted out of Troy, is a candidate for the practice squad.

Matthews, who starred at non-scholarship D-IAA San Diego, was held catchless in three games with the Jags last season. Former Rams fifth-rounder Brooks Foster was waived to create roster space.

Matthews was elevated to the active roster in late 2010 to block the Colts - his former team - from signing him with Austin Collie (concussion) out. He could head back to Indy, but projects as nothing more than a practice squad player.
