John Gant has signed with the Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball, according to a report from Japan.
Gant worked around serious control issues to register a 3.42 ERA over his first 76 1/3 innings this past season with the Cardinals, but the wheels fell off following a July 30 deadline trade to the Twins. The 29-year-old right-hander will presumably get a chance to operate as a starter in NPB. He likely would have been stuck with a non-guaranteed minor league contract had he opted to wait through MLB’s lockout.

Oh dear. Not exactly the way you want to go out in your final start of the campaign. Gant struck out three and walked two over his four innings of work. While he did keep the ball in the park, the 29-year-old right-hander was repeatedly bullied for RBI knocks, with the Royals tagging him for two runs in the first inning, two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth inning before he was mercifully relieved of his duties. Gant ends the 2021 campaign the owner of a dreary 5.61 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 92/71 K/BB ratio across 33 2/3 innings with the Twins after shuttling over to the Twin Cities from St. Louis via trade at the end of July.
