Cardinals signed WR Jaymar Johnson from their practice squad.
An annual participant in Larry Fitzgerald’s offseason camp, Johnson will be limited to special teams duty in Arizona. The Cardinals already have six receivers on the roster, with Stephen Williams inactive each week.
  • FA Wide Receiver #83
    Cardinals waived WR Jaymar Johnson.
Johnson played in one game, without a catch, after being promoted from the practice squad a month ago.
  • FA Wide Receiver #83
Cardinals waived WR Jaymar Johnson, WR Gino Crump, DE Landon Cohen, S Eddie Elder, WR Tre Gray, CB Marshay Green, FB Reagan Maui’a, LB Marcus McGraw, LB Zack Nash, CB James Nixon, P Ricky Schmitt, and LB Paul Vassallo.
We appreciate NFL teams getting their cuts out of the way now so Monday’s deadline to trim to 75 isn’t quite so cumbersome. Johnson, Cohen, Green, Maui’a, and Schmitt have bounced around the league. The rest were UDFAs.
  • FA Wide Receiver #83
Vikings coach Brad Childress noted that WR/KR Jaymar Johnson is “on a mission” to make the team out of training camp this season.
Childress called Johnson the team’s hardest worker and revealed that last year’s sixth-rounder has added 17(!) pounds while getting down to 3 percent body fat. Johnson will have to beat out Aundrae Allison, Darius Reynaud and Glenn Holt for fifth receiver duties.
  • FA Wide Receiver #83
Former Vikings great Cris Carter says Jaymar Johnson “could start for the Vikings” after training the second-year receiver in Minnesota this week.
Relax, Cris. Johnson has impressed this offseason, but still has a long way to go to make the team, let alone start. Johnson is hoping to catch on as a fifth receiver and kickoff return option. He may have to push Bobby Wade or Aundrae Allison off the roster to earn a spot.
  • FA Wide Receiver #11
Rookie Percy Harvin will be the starting kick returner in the Vikings’ preseason opener.
Harvin isn’t a natural in the return game but has been taking the majority of reps and now says he feels comfortable catching kickoffs and punts. We’ll see how he does with the other team sprinting at him. Jaymar Johnson and Sidney Rice are also getting looks as return men.
  • FA Running Back #46
Patriots WR/PR Darius Reynaud is expected to rejoin the team this week after missing all of last week while dealing with a family issue.
Jaymar Johnson returned punts while Reynaud was out. Expect Reynaud to step right back in resume his job this week against the Ravens.
  • FA Wide Receiver #83
Along with rookie Percy Harvin, Jaymar Johnson is a serious contender for the Vikings’ primary punt return job.
The Vikings are looking for more explosiveness than Bobby Wade can provide. Johnson has the early edge because Harvin isn’t a natural at handling punts. Johnson will also back up Bernard Berrian at split end this year.
  • FA Running Back #46
Darius Reynaud and Jaymar Johnson are competing for the Vikings’ punt return job.
The Vikings kept six receivers, but Reynaud’s ability to play special teams weighed heavily into that. He returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown in the preseason finale. Neither Reynaud or Johnson figure to have much of an impact catching the ball this season.
  • FA Wide Receiver #83
Vikings declared WRs Jaymar Johnson and Greg Lewis, CB Asher Allen, S Jamarca Sanford, LB Erin Henderson, C Kory Lichtensteiger, third QB Sage Rosenfels, and DT Fred Evans inactive for Week 1 against the Chiefs.
Bernard Berrian is active. Benny Sapp will be the Vikes’ nickel back.
