Mayfield

Mayfield went unclaimed on waivers and will remain with the Angels as organizational infield depth. The versatile 31-year-old veteran has gotten into 23 games this season at the big-league level, hitting .186/.230/.271 with one homer and one steal in 74 plate appearances.

The move was made to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Touki Toussaint who was acquired from the Braves on Sunday. There’s a chance he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to serve as infield depth for the Angels at Triple-A Salt Lake.

This isn’t the first time -- and certainly won’t be the last time -- that Mayfield has been called up and sent back down in the same week this season. This time, he’s bowing out in favor of Anthony Rendon who is returning from the injured list. Mayfield will continue to function as extra infield depth at Triple-A.

He’s taking the place of Luis Rengifo who went on the paternity leave list on Wednesday. Mayfield has already appeared in 20 games for the Angels this season, slashing a meager .220/.270/.322 with one homer, six RBI and a 13/3 K/BB ratio over 63 plate appearances.

Mayfield goes back to Triple-A to make room for Matt Duffy after Duffy came off the COVID-19 injured list on Saturday. The infielder will likely be an up-and-down option for the Halos all season.
