Stanback

Brown drew comparisons to Wes Welker from WRs coach Jerry Sullivan during offseason drills. Stanback is the latest tight-end conversion project after the Jags failed to develop Maurice Stovall and Ernest Wilford in the role. PR Quan Cosby and FB Will Ta’ufo’ou were waived in corresponding moves.

Stanback worked as the Patriots No. 3 quarterback while on the practice squad for much of last season. He has never shown much as a receiver during his career and there’s not much reason to think he ever will.

A 2007 fourth-rounder, Stanback has appeared in just two games since 2009. Eskridge was an undrafted free agent.

That would leave Sam Hurd likely battling a host of undrafted rookies, Isaiah Stanback, Jamel Richardson, and Jerheme Urban for the fifth and final spot behind Patrick Crayton, Terry Glenn, and T.O. Hurd should have the leg up.

Dallas wants to try him on punt returns, but Stanback must get healthy first. He’s currently dealing with shin splints and has no timetable to return.

Stanback could be this year’s Skyler Green if he doesn’t get healthy fast. The Lisfranc injury he suffered in his senior year may now be causing problems throughout his lower body. We’re guessing Stanback won’t make the team.

Stanback, a converted quarterback, is fighting for a roster spot in Dallas.

He’s not taking part in team drills yet but says he had a “breakthrough” this week, also running sprints at full speed. The fourth-round pick is aiming to be healthy by training camp, when he’ll get a look as Dallas’ punt returner.

The likeliest scenario may be Gramatica placekicking with Folk kicking off. That would mean one less roster spot elsewhere, however, and could force Dallas to go with two QBs or try to get Isaiah Stanback on the practice squad.

We’re not sure how shin splints that are almost certainly related to the Lisfranc foot injury he suffered during his senior could be classified as a non-football injury. Either way, Stanback likely won’t help much as a rookie.
