U.S. Golf Association officials are expected to announce early Monday that the U.S. Open will return to Winged Foot Golf Club’s venerable West Course for the fifth time according to an Associated Press report. It will host the 2020 championship.
In 2008 the club, which hosted its first championship in 1929, voted overwhelmingly to not host the 2015 Open in large part because of damage on the adjacent East Course, which was the site of much of the championship’s infrastructure, and a marginal profit that was estimated to be $2 million.
The West Course last hosted the 2006 U.S. Open which was won by Geoff Ogilvy after one of the most eventful finishes in recent history. Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie finished a stroke behind Ogilvy after both made double bogey at the last hole.
This year’s championship will be played at Merion Golf Club followed by Pinehurst (2014), Chambers Bay in Washington (2015), Oakmont (2016), Erin Hills in Wisconsin (2017), Shinnecock Hills (2018) and Pebble Beach (2019).
