Gustafson’s Ben Hogan Award acceptance speech

Thumbnail

Sophie Gustafson was presented the Ben Hogan Award from the Golf Writers Association of America Wednesday night in Augusta, Ga. The 38-year-old LPGA star, who suffers from a sever stutter, received the award for ‘overcoming a physical handicap.’

Gustafson, who had long eschewed public speaking, gave an emotional and poignant interview to Golf Channel at last year’s Solheim Cup. In accepting her Hogan award from Golf World’s Ron Sirak, in front of a 300-member audience, Gustafson opted to pre-record her speech. The 6-minute, 33-second recording, which can be viewed below, showcased the severity of Gustafson’s stutter, but more so her courage and humor.
