Rory McIlroy is once again the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking. Despite falling short against Rickie Fowler in the three-man playoff at the Wells Fargo Championship, McIlroy finished high enough to pass Luke Donald for the fifth swap of the top ranking since March. McIlroy needed to finish higher than a two-way tie for seventh place to land No. 1 again.
Wells Fargo Championship winner Fowler improved 15 positions to 24th in the ranking on the back of his first PGA Tour win. McIlroy’s playoff co-runner-up D.A. Points cracked the top 100 at No. 73, gaining 34 spots.
Donald fell to second, while Lee Westwood is third, Bubba Watson fourth and Hunter Mahan fifth. Steve Stricker, Tiger Woods and Martin Kaymer are next. Webb Simpson moved up to ninth from 14th. Phil Mickelson remains 10th.
For his win in the Spanish Open and first victory since 2010, Francesco Molinari moved up to 29th from 46th.
