Ping engineers say they focused on blending workability and forgiveness, as well as improving performance from a variety of lies and turf conditions when they developed the i20 line of fairways and hybrids. Both are currently being played on tours by its staff professionals.
The i20 fairways are made of stainless steel and feature a compact, traditional head designed to launch shots high and straight. A black-matte finish is intended, not only to give the clubs a sleek look, but also to absorb light, so players may focus on their shots without distraction.
At the same time, a low and deep Center of Gravity (CG) is geared to produce a higher launch angle with low spin and faster ball velocity for greater distance and more penetrating shot trajectories, while a neutral head rotation promotes square impact. Company technicians say they also lowered the Moment of Inertia (MOI) of the shaft axis for greater workability.
As for the i20 hybrids, they boast a deep CG in a small-profile head, so golfers can launch their shots high and land them softly. In addition, Ping club makers added more surface area low on the clubface for greater forgiveness, while creating a straight leading edge and contoured head that is intended to make aiming easier. They also lowered the MOI of the shaft axis in these clubs and gave them that same, stealth bomber-like finish of the i20 fairways.
The i20 fairways come in lofts of 14 (3-wood Strong), 15 (3-wood) and 18 (5-wood) degrees, while the hybrids feature lofts of 17, 20 and 23 degrees. Both are available with TFC 707 series shafts stock, as well as Project X Black from True Temper.
