Golf Channel On-Course Analyst Matt Gogel is in Charlotte, North Carolina this week for the Wells Fargo Championship. When asked about the low scores, Gogel said about three times a year the late-early groups have a huge advantage over the early-late groups due to weather conditions and that was true this week. The course became much more firm and fast on Friday afternoon which made scoring conditions much more difficult for the late groups in the second round.
Watching Webb Simpson, Gogel gets a feeling that this could be his week because Webb could hit the ball into a bad spot yet find a way to either get up and down or chip it in for an eagle or a birdie. He has not watched Watney this week but will be following both Watney and Simpson today.
In many cases, playing partners are able to feed off of the success of another member of their group. That was not the case this week with Tiger Woods as Tiger looked completely lost on the course on Thursday and Friday. Tiger needs reps on the golf course, not on the practice range. Gogel does not think it is a coincidence that on the week he won at Bay Hill, he played seven consecutive days of competitive golf when you include the Tavistock Cup. Tiger needs to be playing more tournaments and not take three weeks in between starts.
