Learn how to sequence your golf swing correctly

Thumbnail

Have you ever wondered why you don’t hit the ball as far as you think you should?

I can’t tell you how many times that I have had a student ask me: “Why do my friends who are much smaller than me hit the ball so much further?”

If you have ever uttered these same words, the chances are that your swing is out of sequence.

What does this mean?

The golf swing is an athletic motion that requires a winding and unwinding of the body along with the swinging of the golf club in a circular motion. If you can get the body and club to work in the proper sequence you will find that you can produce a powerful golf swing that generates more speed at impact.

According to the dictionary the definition of sequence is: “A particular order in which related events, movements, or things follow each other.”

In order to create a powerful and consistent golf swing you need to get everything moving in the correct order. If you get the sequence correct during the backswing chances are you will produce the proper sequence in the forward swing.

The proper backswing sequence is:

1. Clubhead

2. Arms

3. Torso/Chest

4. Hips

The clubhead has the furthest distance to travel from the ground up to the top of the golf swing, therefore it must move first. The arms will follow in the sequence, then the torso, and lastly the hips.

If you are successful in creating this sequence, the forward swing should take care of itself and unwind in the opposite sequence (hips, torso, arms and club).

Get the sequence correct and you should be on your way to longer and straighter golf shots.
