If you’ve ever wanted to see if you can handle the pressure at the famed 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., here’s your opportunity.
Between now and a few weeks before the Players Championship set for May 6-9, the Sawgrass Golf Resort & Spa, a Marriott Resort, is offering a pretty cool golf package.
For $288 a night (double occupancy), golfers can play Dye’s Duo – the famed TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course as well as Dye’s Valley Course – stay at the resort (minimum two-night stay), and get a one-hour golf lesson at the Tour Academy. The package also includes forecaddies for the rounds, clubfitting and a special welcome amenity.
The offer is good until April 11, which means as we get closer to the Players Championship, course conditions should be pretty close to what the pros will experience.
The Stadium Course is, of course, the site of the Players Championship, which many consider a fifth major. Besides the 17th, the difficult layout is also known for its great finishing kick which includes the risk-reward par-5 16th with its peninsula green and the harrowing dogleg left par-4 18th, which has water down the entire left side of the hole. But the little island green 17th, the brainchild of Pete Dye’s wife Alice, gets most of the attention.
The Valley Course is also a great layout and in excellent condition. Because it’s more than 1,000 yards shorter, it can be very enjoyable, yet challenging, and serves as a great warm-up in this package.
Also of note is that there have been some terrific renovations the past couple of years, both to the courses and the resort, the latter of which underwent a $16 million renovation. The golf facility also got a magnificent, 77,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style clubhouse a couple of years ago, making it the largest in the country.
