Watching Matt Ginella’s latest journey brought back great memories for me of my own golf trip to Los Cabos. I’ve played golf, swam with dolphins, dined in five-star joints and partied like a rock star in Los Cabos, a desolate stretch of land at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula where the mountains, desert and sea collide. Cabo’s collection of assets – seaside golf, great year-round weather, world-class beachfront resorts, deep sea fishing, a rockin’ nightlife in Cabo San Lucas and an authentic Mexican town called San Jose del Cabo – is tough to beat. Two Starwood Resorts I’ve slept in, the Westin Resort & Spa Los Cabos and the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar Golf & Spa Resort Los Cabos, are perfect for golfers.
Cabo rivals Hawaii and the Dominican Republic for ocean views that leave players spellbound. Tom Fazio’s Querencia (where Ginella played) is ultra-private, but I’ve snuck inside the gates as well. The Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol will always be my favorite Jack Nicklaus course in the world, but the 27-hole Palmilla Golf Club, Club Campestre San Jose and Puerto Los Cabos (with nine holes by Greg Norman and nine by Nicklaus) all have their merits. Diamante, home to a highly regarded Davis Love III course, will debut the world’s first Tiger Woods design in the next couple years, proving the sun never sets on this gorgeous golf destination.
