Designed for highly skilled players, the Titleist CB and MB irons have been a favorite of elite professional and amateur players since the clubs were introduced in 2009. Which has created something of a problem for the equipment maker’s research-and-development people.
“When we ask our tour players what we can do to improve the CB or MB models, their reaction is always the same: ‘Don’t do anything.’ ” says Steve Pelisek, general manager of Titleist golf clubs. But the folks at Titleist felt they could make these popular blades better.
“It was a welcome challenge for our R&D team,” explains Pelisek. And the results, he says, are updated versions of the CB and MB models that are designed to provide better feel and enable players to work the ball with greater ease.
“They also look better at address and perform even better through the turf,” he adds.
Forged from 1025 carbon steel, these irons feature constant blade lengths with minimal progressive offset. The CBs boast optimized shallow cavity backs with inner-cavity muscles behind the impact areas for a solid blade feel, while the MB are classic muscleback irons, with weighting positioned behind the sweet spots.
Both models have compact shapes designed with precise center-of-gravity locations and traditional tour lofts to deliver preferred ball flights and feels. And they come with preworn leading edges for crisp ground contact and less digging at entry, as well as smooth sole width progressions through the set to enhance ground interaction.
Though these clubs were only released to the general public in early November, they have been fixtures on the worldwide professional tours for the past several months. More than 75 players have put them in play to date, including Matteo Manassero, Tim Clark and Geoff Ogilvy.
