Golf retailer Edwin Watts Golf Shops filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection early Monday, according to a Reuters report.
The report cites a court filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware that indicates the retailer listed estimated liabilities and assets of $100 million to $500 million. Based in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., the company sells golf equipment, apparel and accessories, both in-store and online, and is owned by Sun Capital Partners, Inc.
According to its website, Edwin Watts has 90 domestic retail locations across 15 states in addition to a digital catalog and eCommerce site. The bulk of its retail footprint is in the Southeast U.S., with 32 stores in Florida and 12 stores in Georgia.
The company began as a single shop started by Watts and his brother, Wayne, in Fort Walton Beach in the 1960s. Today the Edwin Watts website indicates that in addition to its brick-and-mortar retail shops, the company ships more than 200,000 packages annually and boasts a worldwide distribution of approximately 14 million for its six seasonal catalogs.
