CHARLOTTE, N.C. – When Billy Mayfair got his luggage off the carousel on Monday, he had 45 minutes to be on the tee for the Monday qualifier.
His wife went to get the rental car, he grabbed his bags, she phoned the course to have them set a carry bag aside as she was going to caddie, and off they stormed.
Now he’s leading one of the best events on Tour – an event where they provide top-of-the-line Mercedes cars to all contestants. When I assumed he took the rental car back to Avis, he gave me a look that said ‘are you crazy?’
‘No way,’ he said. ‘It’s a Chevy all week for me man.’
