CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sitting in the airport restaurant surrounded by players, caddies, and fans while we watched Rory McIlroy do the unthinkable at Quail Hollow.
Please remember that people like me are often accused of hyperbole in our characterization of what we just witnessed. And also remember that players are usually reluctant to sing the praises of their peers – it’s human nature.
But today was an exception.
The epithets used to describe what we witnessed haven’t been heard since 1996, when the guy Rory is now destined to be compared to won twice after turning pro.
‘Greatest round I’ve ever seen,’ said one player, and nobody could find a reason to offer any disagreement.
Steve Wheatcroft just walked by and asked me, ‘How many times can you shoot 62, set a course record, have the best round of the day by 4 shots, and still come up 4 shots short of the best round of the day in professional golf.’
I can’t answer that one.
