PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Matt Every jumped out to an early lead as the only player in the Valspar Championship’s opening-round morning wave to post a 3-under 68.

Just don’t expect him to get too excited about it.

“I’ve played enough to know the first round doesn’t matter that much,” said Every, still seeking his first PGA Tour win. “This place is just going to be about not making doubles and taking yourself out of the tournament. You’re going to make bogeys just because there’s mud balls out there and the wind and then the greens, but I know that it’s not that big a deal.”

In nine previous starts this season, Every owns three top-10 finishes, just one fewer than he had during the entire 2013 campaign.

“I’ve been playing a lot better this year. It’s fun for me. I can wake up in the morning and go to the course when you know it’s going to be pretty good. Yeah, it’s been good so far.”
