OPELIKA, Ala. -- Oklahoma States Cowgirl golf team carded an even-par 288 during Tuesdays first round of the NCAA Division I Womens Golf Championships on the Grand National Lake Course.

Sophomore Karin Sjodin had three birdies and two bogeys to finish with a 1-under-par 71, two strokes behind the individual leader.

The 288 is the lowest score by a Cowgirl team at the NCAA Championships in school history. The previous low was a 290 during the final round of the 2002 championships.

It felt really good, said Sjodin, when speaking of her first round. I was hitting the ball well and hitting the greens. I might have missed a few fairways, but I was never in trouble. It was a solid round all around.

I know that my swing is working right now. I just need to hit the ball solid and then go out and make some putts.

Three Cowgirls finished in the top 10 individually as freshmen Candy Herrera and Mallorie Underwood each shot even-par 72 and are tied for 10th place. Junior Annie Thurman made a birdie on her 18th hole and finished with a 73 to tie for 18th place.

Its a great thing for us, after the way we played at nationals last year, to come out here today and put a really good number up on the board, said head coach Amy Weeks. Weve got three young players on the team, and for them to be part of a low score during the first round of the national championships is a really good way to start. Obviously, Karin and Annies leadership and scoring abilities are going to be very, very important the rest of the week.

Oklahoma State took advantage of mild weather and virtually no wind during the morning round. Play was halted briefly in the early afternoon due to impending storms, but was shortly resumed. The wind picked up during the afternoon round.

The tournament will continue with 18 rounds on each day, Wednesday through Friday.
