ORLANDO, Fla. ' Kim Welch will play in the Navistar LPGA Classic this week via an exemption she earned by winning Big Break Kaanapali.
In the ninth edition of GOLF CHANNELs Big Break series, Welch defeated Sophie Sandolo to earn a spot in the LPGA Tour event. The victory occurred last December, since which time she finished tenth on the Duramed FUTURES Tour money list to earn playing privileges on the 2009 LPGA Tour.
Winning the Big Break gave me that extra boost of confidence that I needed to get my first win on the Duramed FUTURES Tour and my 2009 LPGA Tour card, said the Sacramento, Calif. resident. I have my sights set on having a great week at the Navistar LPGA Classic. It’ll be a perfect preview to what I’ll experience next year, and I can’t wait to see how my game stacks up against those players.
GOLF CHANNEL will televise the Navistar LPGA Classic Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ET, Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET and 6:30 p.m. ET during the weekend.
The Big Break concept showcases highly skilled golfers competing against each other in a variety of challenges that test their physical skills and mental toughness, with the ultimate winner awarded his/her Big Break, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in select professional tournaments, and other career-building prizes.
Past Big Break champions have won their chance to compete on some of the worlds top professional circuits, such as the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour, European Tour, LPGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and Canadian Tour.
Former winner Tommy Gainey is in the midst of his rookie season on the PGA TOUR while previous female Big Breakers currently play on the LPGA Tour.
The tenth edition of Big Break, Big Break X: Michigan, will premiere on October 7 at 10 p.m. ET.
