Phil Mickelsons wife doing well after surgery

Phil Mickelson didn’t compete in this past week’s British Open, but his wife experienced a major victory in her battle with cancer.

Amy Mickelson is doing well after surgery for breast cancer, Mickelson said on his Web site. He also expressed gratitude for the support they have received.

‘The best news so far is that the cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes, which improves our chances of beating this in the short and long term,’ Phil Mickelson wrote in a posting on July 16. ‘We’re awaiting one test result that will influence Amy’s treatment plan. The waiting and wondering sometimes can be the most difficult part but she has a very positive attitude and has handled all of this with her usual grace. I’m so proud of her.’

Amy Mickelson reportedly underwent surgery July 1 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

‘The kids were in Houston all week and I know that helped speed up her emotional recovery,’ Mickelson wrote of his wife. ‘They bring her endless joy. We could not have done this without the help of our family and friends. We appreciate everything they have done and continue to do every day. I don’t know what we would do without them.’

Mickelson’s mother, Mary, was also recently diagnosed with breast cancer. He said the support his family has received as been therapeutic.

‘We continue to be overwhelmed with the support of our extended group of friends and family as well,’ he said. ‘The prayers, notes, articles, e-mails, texts, and packages get us through every day. We feel the support all around us. Our gratitude is hard to put into words.’
