Vonn: Woods is a good ‘support system’

Tiger Woods was in attendance Thursday as girlfriend Lindsey Vonn wrapped up her final race at the Alpine World Ski Championships, and after her final run Vonn spoke about the support she has received from the world’s most celebrated golfer.

“It’s awesome. It’s hard with our schedules to be able to watch each other compete, and it meant a lot to me that he was here for the Super G and also today for the (Giant Slalom),” Vonn said. “It’s so nice to have his support.”

This marked Woods’ second trip in as many weeks to Vail, Colo., during the world championships, as he was in attendance for one of Vonn’s events last week before he played in the Farmers Insurance Open. Woods also attended one of Vonn’s races last month in Italy, and she noted that while their sports are rather different, she is able to rely on him as a resource.

“He’s always just a good sounding board,” she said. “He’s obviously an athlete himself, so it’s nice to just kind of talk to him when I feel down, and I had a couple of down days this last week, so he was definitely a good support system.”

Woods withdrew after 11 holes last week at Torrey Pines, and Wednesday he released a statement saying he would not return to competition until his golf game was “tournament-ready.” He also stated a desire to “spend time with the people that are important to me,” and Vonn added that he continues to learn more about the intricacies of competitive skiing.

“He tries really hard,” she said. “He was watching my video with me last night, and he was asking a lot of questions. So he really cares and he tries very hard, and it’s very sweet.”
