Fans of the World Cup will likely enjoy the new format that is set to debut at next year’s WGC-Match Play Championship.
The San Francisco Chronicle, which reported earlier this week that the Tour’s only match-play event was heading to Harding Park and shifting to May, revealed a new format for the tournament on Tuesday night: 16 four-player groups that compete in a round-robin stage in which each group’s winner will advance the Round of 16.
From there, the Round of 16 will be played Saturday morning and followed by the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon, with the semifinals and finals to be played on Sunday afternoon.
As the Chronicle notes, the significant tweak to the format ensures that all 64 of the world’s best players will be at the event for at least three days (through Friday).
An official announcement announcing these changes is expected to be made during a news conference Wednesday.
Also of note, according to the Chronicle: the tournament’s new date, April 29-May 3, the week before the Players Championship.
