PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Phil Mickelson will miss his third consecutive cut at The Players Championship.
Mickelson made a triple bogey and double bogey Friday on his way to a 4-over-par 76, his highest score on the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in six years.
“I was thinking to myself as I was walking around, `I can’t believe I’ve actually won here,’” Mickelson said.
Mickelson won The Players in 2007 but has more than twice as many MCs on the course than top-10 finishes. This will be his seventh MC in 22 starts. He has three top-10 finishes.
In Friday’s round, Mickelson couldn’t overcome a triple bogey at the 18th hole and a double bogey at the sixth. With his 73 on Thursday, he ended up at 5 over.

“This is a very penalizing course,” Mickelson said. “I kept hitting it in spots that were impossible recoveries. Certainly, the water is a tough recovery.”
Mickelson hit his approach shot, a 6-iron from 186 yards, into the water at the 18th, his ninth hole of the day.
“I was trying to hit a draw into the wind, and I just blocked it and just hung it right, out into the water,” Mickelson said. “I was going pretty good until then.”
Mickelson said he plans to play the Wells Fargo Championship next week, the Memorial and the FedEx St. Jude Classic heading into the U.S. Open.
