Rory McIlroy’s six-shot comeback to win the Deutsche Bank Championship is the largest of his PGA Tour career and his second-largest as a pro. He was seven shots back before winning the 2014 BMW PGA Championship.
McIlroy also tied the largest 54-hole deficit overcome to win in FedEx Cup Playoff history. Adam Scott overcame a six-shot deficit to win The Barclays in 2013.
Here are some other statistical notes from the proceedings at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass.
• McIlroy finished at 15 under par. To get to that score, he had to play the final 69 holes in 19 under after starting the first round par-bogey-triple bogey.
• McIlroy’s 12 PGA Tour wins are the third-most in the last 30 years by any player before age 28. Only Tiger Woods (39) and Phil Mickelson (14) had more such wins in that span.
• McIlroy’s 12 PGA Tour wins are the most of any European player since World War II. Sergio Garcia, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo have nine apiece.
• Since the beginning of 2010, McIlroy has two more wins (12) than any other player. Jason Day is next with 10.
• The BMW Championship is being played this week at Crooked Stick, its first time at that course since 2012. The 2012 winner? McIlroy. He won the Deutsche Bank Championship that year, too.
• McIlroy led the Deutsche Bank field in both driving distance and putting average, the first time in his career he has led both categories.
• McIlroy made it seven years in a row that the Deutsche Bank winner has come from behind after 54 holes.
• Paul Casey’s runner-up finish was his sixth on the PGA Tour.
• Casey held a three-shot lead entering the final round. Nine of the last 10 players with exactly a three-shot lead after 54 holes on the PGA Tour did not win.
• Adam Scott rallied with a 65, his lowest round this week, to finish fourth, four shots back. he birdies six of his last nine holes.
• This was Scott’s second straight top-5 finish (he was T-4 last week at The Barclays).
• It was Scott’s best worldwide finish since his win at Doral in March.
• Patrick Reed, who closed with a 69, was 6-for-7 scrambling in the final round and a combined 16-for-18 scrambling over last three rounds.
