GLENEAGLES, Scotland – It didn’t take long for the conversation to turn to who could be the next Ryder Cup captains.
Replacing Tom Watson, who has been largely questioned for everything from his captain’s picks to his team lineups, will now fall to the PGA of America, but one name that can be left off the list, at least for now, is Phil Mickelson.
“Oh, no, no. I’ve been on eight losing teams,” Mickelson smiled when asked about his desire for the job. “That’s way off in the future. I intend to keep making this team as a player, and I intend to do my best to get on the (2016) team.”
Nor did Jim Furyk, who at 44 is likely at least four years away from his turn as captain, seem poised to take the job.

“When the time is right, I would love to do that someday. It would be an honor,” he said.
Similarly, European captain Paul McGinley didn’t seem interested in a return as an assistant captain.
“The Ryder Cup has been very good to me and I’m quite happy now to take very much a background [role],” he said. “I’ve done my piece and I’m happy to have the honor and happy to help in any way going forward but I don’t think a vice captain would be right for me.”
