Club maker Bob Vokey continues to look for ways to improve the premium wedges he produces for Titleist, and his latest effort, known as Spin Milled 5 line or SM5, is designed to provide more spin on more types of shots. He says it also gives golfers the industry’s most extensive range of options, with 21 different loft/bounce/grind combinations and six Tour-inspired grinds.
Made of 8620 carbon steel, the SM5 wedges feature TX3 grooves, which boast 7 percent more groove volume as well as two performance configurations that channel away sand and grass for improved contact between the ball and groove edge and better spin. The Spin Milled technology used for these is also made to provide precise trajectory and distance control as a result of the milled grooves and machined face texture.
According to Vokey, each groove is milled to the tightest possible tolerance and individually cut to the maximum dimensions allowed by the Rules of Golf, and then 100 percent inspected. In addition, a localized high-frequency face treatment provides increased groove durability for longer spin retention over the life of the wedge.
“I’ve always said that I have the best R&D facility in the world, the PGA Tour,” says Vokey. “I worked closely with our team of craftsmen and engineers to apply everything I’ve learned from the best players in the world to Spin Milled 5. We’ve increased the spin. We’ve given players more control. And we’ve got a bounce and grind matrix that will provide the versatility and confidence to hit a variety of shots around the green, and get up-and-down more.”
The SM5s are available in lofts of 46 to 62 degrees, in two-degree increments. Vokey says these wedges come with a more compact and balanced profile and three new finish options: Tour Chrome, Gold Nickel and Raw Black.
