PINEHURST, N.C. – The U.S. Open, particularly the version played on a firm and fiery No. 2 course, normally wouldn’t be the place to start breaking in new putters, but one of the PGA Tour’s best plans to try a new model at the national championship.
Brandt Snedeker plans to use a new True Balance putter from Bridgestone Golf this week at Pinehurst. The club features a putter head with standard weight with an ultra lightweight graphite shaft (35 grams compared to the normal 115-gram shafts) and light grip (26 grams).
The weight distribution has shifted the balance point on the putter to less than 5 inches from the sole, giving the club, officials say, more feel.
The new putter, which has an overall swing weight of 133 grams, was launched at the PGA Show earlier this year and Snedeker and Lucas Glover will be the first to put it in play on the PGA Tour.
Snedeker is not using the graphite shaft, but Glover is and said the putter allows him to rotate the club more easily through impact and helps with his distance control.
