The PGA Merchandise Show is often an occasion for equipment makers to introduce products, and Callaway Golf is using the 2014 edition of the annual trade conclave to unveil its X2 Hot line, which includes drivers, fairway metals, hybrids and irons.

“We challenged ourselves to reinvent each product (in this group) to meaningfully improve distance, speed and forgiveness across every category,” says Alan Hocknell, senior vice president of research and development for Callaway. “We worked hard for every ounce of discretionary weight, every thousandth of an inch of metal, to increase ball speed and overall distance while improving total performance, especially on off-center hits.”

Hocknell is among those at the Carlsbad, Calif., concern who believe that the new X2 Hot driver is going to generate some excitement. One reason, he says, is its use of Callaway’s new Hyper Speed Face technology, which enables the company to add size to the clubhead without adding weight.

This club also utilizes the equipment maker’s Advanced Optifit Hosel, so that golfers are able to adjust loft to help optimize launch angle, spin and lie angle to modify directional bias. A total of eight possible settings are available.

Hocknell says it is important to understand that there are many recipes for distance in a driver. And that is why Callaway is adding so many options to the X2 Hot. The standard version comes with a 460 cc head, and is available in 9-, 10.5- and 13.5-degree HT lofts as well as an Aldila Tour Blue shaft stock.

A Pro model, with a 440 cc head and 8.5 degrees of loft, features a more neutral center of gravity and includes a seven-gram external weight. The stock shaft in that offering is an Aldila Tour Green.
