I would like to take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to Golf Channel and all the Big Break production associates for their consideration and extreme hospitality. It has been both an honor and a privilege to have been chosen as a participant on Big Break Indian Wells.
Words cannot express the value of this experience in my life. I can truly say that I did receive a ‘Big Break’ in my quest to play on the PGA Tour.
It all began when I arrived in Palm Springs and was welcomed by Golf Channel with unimaginable hospitality, and made to feel like an accomplished celebrity.
As the hours moved forward, my dream of playing in a PGA TOUR event became more real. I could not wait to begin the competition and hopefully move myself closer to my quest.
Each day was challenging and full of excitement; certainly it was the beginning of the end for all but one. I was still in the game after week six, and could easily see the finish line, however something wasn’t right. My shot quality was dropping and my confidence was dwindling more and more each day. In my own mind, I could sense the inevitable. Before I knew it, I was eliminated. It was only then that I realized that I was not ready. The game is too hard, and the competition is too fierce for those that won’t fight. But that’s not me. I’m a fighter and I’m not giving up.
My wake-up call came at the hands of Carl, of all people. Not only did he eliminate me, but he inspired me in the process. He is the example of determination, and grit in the face of adversity. Who could have imagined the shots he hit at the last minute, with all odds stacked against him. ‘I tip my hat to you Carl'; you got it done.
Borrowing a line from Arnold not Palmer, ‘I’ll be back’. I am determined to be better. My motivation has been rekindled, and as a result, I have lost 30 pounds and I am no longer smoking. My conditioning has improved and my confidence has been renewed. I am a lean ,mean, fighting, golf-your-ball machine.
My focus and strategy have changed. I have begun a new practice regiment, which includes an emphasis on the short game. As my Pop used to say, ‘Drive for the show and putt for the dough’.
My Big Break is not over but only beginning. When you turn on golf, look for me cause I’ll be there, too. To all my fans who have honored me with their support, I say thank you. Each fan is special; more than I deserve or could ever hope for. I can’t wait to bring you inside the ropes.
Humbled but determined, I remain everybody’s friend. God’s Blessings to each of you.
