Monty Goosen Captains for Inaugural Goodwill Trophy

NEWPORT, Wales -- Colin Montgomerie will captain a combined Europe-United States team against Retief Goosen’s ‘Rest of the World’ lineup in the inaugural Goodwill Trophy in China, organizers announced on Friday.

The Nov. 13-14 competition, which has no prize money, will comprise four foursomes and eight singles matches. Each team will have eight players.

The event will take place at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Guangdong Province near Hong Kong. It will be played on the (Jack) Nicklaus course, one of 10 layouts designed by 10 different players at the massive development. The course was the site of the 1995 World Cup.

Montgomerie said he expected his side to comprise four players from each of the European and U.S. Ryder Cup teams which meet at The K Club outside Dublin Sept. 22-24.

‘Normally it is us against them, but for this tournament we’ll be coming together to play as a team,’ Montgomerie said.

The 2007 event will be held at Celtic Manor, site of this week’s Wales Open.
