LAS VEGAS ' A 33-year-old professional poker player from North Carolina has turned a $10,000 buy-in into $300,000 by winning the World Series of Golf in Las Vegas.
Jody Garaventa, an 11-handicap amateur golfer from Raleigh, N.C., outlasted Kevin Dumont on Thursday after 20 holes.
Dumont, a 53-year-old bar owner from Pennsylvania, won $100,000 for second place.
The tournament with rules loosely based on poker started with 125 players on Tuesday. In the unique format, players bet on their strokes with poker chips, winning chips when they finish holes in fewer strokes or by forcing opponents to fold.
The rules are based on betting patterns in no-limit Texas Hold em poker.
