2024 Masters Tournament recap from Day 1 at Augusta National

The first round of the Masters was delayed by 2 1/2 hours because of inclement weather, but it packed in a lot of entertainment in the shortened window.

On a blustery day at Augusta National, Bryson DeChambeau shot 7-under 65 to grab the early lead, with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler just one back. Check out the highlights from Thursday below:

Listen up!
Rex Hoggard and Ryan Lavner recap Day 1 on the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex & Lav:

And that’s a wrap:
The opening round will resume at 7:45 a.m. EDT.

23 holes on Friday:
Tiger Woods made par on the 13th and is done for the day. He stands at 1 under (8 back), with five holes remaining in Round 1 and a quick turnaround for Round 2.

The horn has sounded:
At 7:52 p.m. EDT. Players can finish the hole on which they’ve started, if they so choose.

Two great par saves:
Tiger gets up and down on Nos. 11 and 12 to remain at 1 under par. He might have one hole left before darkness descends.

The new Bryson?
Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard on this version of Bryson DeChambeau:

Bryson DeChambeau of 2024 does not sound anything like the Bryson DeChambeau from years ago.

Tiger check:
Woods makes two birdies and one bogey on the first nine for a 1-under 35.

McIlroy staying positive:

The Super Group:
Scottie Scheffler, 6-under 66
Rory McIlroy, 1-under 71
Xander Schauffele, even-par 72

Bogey-bogey finish:
Defending champion Jon Rahm ends his round 5-5, for a 1-over 73. “I haven’t made it easy on myself,” he told ESPN.

Oh, Rory
McIlroy fails to birdie the par-5 15th after a gravity-defying break, misses a 7-footer for birdie at the 16th and then bogeys the 17th. He’s at 1 under par with one to play.

Scheffler is one back:
Following a birdie at the 15th, the world No. 1 does it again at the par-3 16th.

From 1 over to 1 under:

McIlroy needed a good start:
So far, so good.

A little more filtered than when on LIV:

Things are shaping up nicely:

Par’s a par:
Tiger Woods went lefty on his second shot at the par-5 second. Still made par.

Full Jordan mode from the start:

Under par, no matter the par:
Bryson DeChambeau once called Augusta National a par 67 for him. He shot 65 on Thursday with eight birdies and one bogey.

One hole, one birdie:
Tiger Woods hits the fairway, finds the green and makes the putt at the par-4 first.

Swing coming together?
Golf Channel’s Ryan Lavner wrote a great feature on Viktor Hovland and his constant quest to get better. Pretty good so far this week.

The man’s a menace!
Bryson DeChambeau makes a 30-footer for birdie at the par-4 17th to move to 7 under and take a three-shot lead.

The 2016 champ:
Danny Willett had shoulder surgery late last year and wasn’t sure if he’d be able to compete this week. He birdied the last on Thursday for a 4-under 68.

The early pace setter:

Just as the wind is kicking up:

No. 1 at -2:

First scores posted:
Erik van Rooyen and Jake Knapp were first out on Thursday. EVR shot 1-under 71, Knapp a 74.

Something about Augusta:
Phil Mickelson has three top-10s in under three seasons on LIV Golf. Yet, the three-time Masters champ finished T-2 at Augusta last year and is 1 under par through his first nine holes in ’24.

Welcome back, Willy Z:
A year ago, Will Zalatoris missed the Masters and underwent back surgery. Now he’s under par on Day 1 at Augusta.

It’s 2:14 p.m. EDT:
T-minus 100 minutes until Tiger Woods tees off.

Almost too easy. Almost:
Rory McIlroy begins his day: 354-yard tee shot, 87-yard wedge to 10 feet ... two-putt par. He follows that by going wide right off the tee at the par-5 second on his way to a bogey-6.

Closest to an ace so far:

This year’s Sam Bennett?
Amateur Christo Lamprecht, from Georgia Tech, gets within one of the lead.

Bryson DeChambeau adds birdies at Nos. 2 and 3 to take the early outright lead at 3 under.

DeChambeau tied for the lead:
Sure, he’s only one hole into his opening round but a birdie at the first has him at 1 under (on a par 72) and T-1.
