It marks the third appearance as an assistant captain for Weir, who joins Korea’s K.J. Choi, Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy and Colombia’s Camilo Villegas on Immelman’s team. The 51-year-old Weird also served as assistant to Nick Price at the 2017 Presidents Cup and to Ernie Els in 2019. The Canadian, an eight-time PGA Tour winner, competed in five Presidents Cups (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009) and was teammates with Immelman in 2005 and 2007. His all-time record at the matches is 13-9-2, and he’s one of five International Team members with 10 or more match wins in competition. “When I think of highlights in my career that really stand out to me, the Presidents Cup always makes the top of the list,” Weir, the 2003 Masters champ, said in a statement. “The comradery that continues to grow within this team is irreplaceable. We can all sense the momentum that is building.” In 2007, the matches were staged in Canada for the first time, with Weir going 3-1-1, highlighted by a 1-up victory over Tiger Woods in singles. He currently competes on the Champions tour, where he notched his first victory at the 2021 Insperity Invitational last May.

Fog delays are a regular occurrence for this part of the schedule. Gamers should expect plenty more of these delays over the next month. Many golfers are antsy to get their 2019 schedule started but they’ll have to wait a bit longer. That includes Mike Weir who is making his first start since a missed cut at the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae (Web.com Tour) in August. He is the first scheduled tee time on La Quinta Country Club today, set to peg it with fellow Canadian, David Hearn. Weir is 9-for-16 here in Palm Springs but he’s missed the cut in his last five starts at the event. He went 1-for-6 on the PGA TOUR last season.

It’s been raining off and on all day and several portions of the course are temporarily unplayable. Rules officials are holding players in their current positions on the course while waiting for the latest round of showers to pass. The early-morning players saw much better conditions than the guys going in the afternoon, which worked out well for Vijay Singh (8-under) and Tiger (6-under), but will work against favorite Jim Furyk. Lift, clean and place rules will be in effect when play resumes.

He shot a 72 on Thursday, which is probably going to come back to haunt him when all is said and done.

This will be a devastating blow to fantasy teams everywhere, as he was a favorite in his home country coming in. Another favorite, Ryan Moore is struggling badly as well and is not likely to make the cut.

He hit just nine (of 28) fairways and 11 greens this week. The mess led to 10 bogeys, three doubles and a triple. He’s now 0-for-2 in his comeback from surgery on his right elbow in August. It leaves him with one start on his Non-exempt Medical Extension to earn $644,854 and get elevated to the Major Medical category. Despite being on the verge of losing status, he’s scheduled to play next week’s Honda and then at Bay Hill, the Masters and the Heritage. Weir was delayed in getting into Mexico this week. His passport was temporarily lost. He had to retrieve it in Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon, and didn’t arrive on site at El Camaleon until nearly midnight. This was his first appearance at the Mayakoba so he had zero opportunity to see the course until he teed off late Thursday morning.

The left split just seven (of 28) fairways and hit just nine greens in regulation in two loops of PGA National, failing to cash for the third time in as many starts this season. He swallowed 10 bogeys and two doubles. This was his last start on a Non-exempt Medical Extension for which he finished $644,854 of meeting its terms. He also fell short of securing conditional status by $388,631. Therefore, Weir will be demoted to the Past Champion category for the remainder of the year. He’s expected to play three of four weeks beginning with the Arnold Palmer Invitational on March 22-25, but only duffer leagues should make room for him if he’s even eligible in those formats.

Hate to use the word choke but Weir basically did. He had putts to win on three consecutive holes. He missed a 10-footer on the final hole of regulation, a 25-footer on the 1st playoff hole and a measly 5-footer on the 2nd playoff hole. On the final playoff hole, Weir drove it in the rough, laid up and then hithis approach shot in the water. A collective groan was heard all across Canada as they will have to wait another year for a chance for one of their own to try to win the Canadian Open.

Since we relayed this to you earlier today, this isn’t news but now that the official field has been released confirming his commitment, we can break down what he needs to retain status on the PGA TOUR. The Honda has a purse of $5.7 million. Weir needs to bank $644,854 to earn a promotion to the Major Medical category, but only a victory would secure that, so he’d climb into Priority Ranking No. 9 anyway. Short of the win, he could secure conditional status (for which he needs $388,631) with no worse than a three-way tie for second place worth $425,600. (A four-way T2 would come up short by $12,431. A solo third would fall shy by just $1,031.) Given the state of Weir’s game in recent memory, it’s unlikely that he’ll make the cut much less make noise as it relates to his medical extension. Regardless, he’s set to compete at Bay Hill, the Masters and the Heritage via other exemptions.

The eight-time TOUR winner has yet to make a cut this season, and has only cashed twice in his last 21 starts covering 2011 and 2012. The ball-striking seems to have left him, as he’s only split 42.54 percent of his fairway, landed 40.17 percent GIR and is only covering 260.3 yards off the tee. A strong showing while circling Quail Hollow would be a welcomed change for Weir.
