7yDerek Gillespie lapped the field on his way to an 8-under-par 30-34=64 during the open qualifier for this week’s Travelers Championship. Other qualifiers include Luke Guthrie (-6), Stuart Appleby (-5), and Cameron Percy (-5) with the latter two surviving a 7-for-2 playoff to punch their ticket.

The Arizona Wildcat circled eight birdies and an eagle to offset a pair of bogeys. Earning his spot into this week’s Travelers, it will be Gillespie’s 10th career start on the PGA TOUR, but first since a missed cut at the 2010 Travelers. The Canadian has spent his time recently on the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica, posting a 4-for-8 record this season including a T13 at the Mazatlan Open in his most recent start (end of May). It’s his only finish inside the top 40 this season with no more events scheduled until September. The 38-year-old is a long shot to contend this week, but today’s round at Ellington Ridge Country Club is a great example of the upside he possesses when he’s firing on all cylinders.
